Capriccio of Caldwell College -- Life in Caldwell College

高一(一)班    李翰程  Gary Lee

When we drove out the gates of Caldwell College, every one of us was unwilling to go. The 9 days we spent here definitely is fascinating.

American school life is really different from that of China, almost everything. From the classes, the food, to the sports, the campus, every single thing, in our eyes, is very much different, which sometimes makes us feel extremely jealous. Let’s start with the classes.

Those who have been watching the American high school or university classes on the Web, or experienced the classes on their own, must have noticed that the most different thing in American classes is the way teachers teach. For instance, Professor Vazquez, who taught us ESL classes during these 9 days, usually brings things like Mr. Bean DVDs and board games to class. He even went online to YouTube.com to search for interesting or educational video clips for us to watch. This is definitely unavailable and impossible in Chinese schools! Although we had the classes for 2 hours without break every day, none of us feel tired or bored. There are also some minor differences, such as class distribution. Most of us say that America is an open country; it seems that this kind of openness has found its way into the system of American education, which blended perfectly.

Food in America is also very different from that of China. The Cougar Den in Caldwell offers very nice American cafeteria meals. From breakfast to dinner, the things we ate were basically bacon and egg, cereal, pizza, spaghetti, and so on. The dining hall was kept really clean and tidy, and the food tasted really nice as well. There was also a very interesting thing that you can’t see in cafeterias in China. You can even cook your own meal in the restaurant! You can choose from various kinds of raw materials like noodles, crab meat, onion, et cetera, and cook the food on a special frying pan. There are also seasonings like curry powder, soy sauce, garlic for you to choose from.  It makes us feel really nice to eat our own creation!

The school campus of Caldwell is extremely large, but the area of the buildings is less than the area of green fields and grasses. There are no gates or fences around the campus, so outsiders can get inside freely and easily. Sporting utilities are open for public use, baseball, football and soccer fields are all free. They have two indoor basketball courts. The courts are in such a good condition that your hands won’t get any dirty after three or four hours of intense playing. Even your Field Goal Percentage may possibly increase a lot (just like me)!

Caldwell truly made a very deep impression on me, as well as every other people in the group. For years we’ve been dreaming of living and studying in an American college, and our dreams finally came true. Yet the truth is that this kind of “free” education may cause some problems, like skipping classes and sleeping late, which can lead to failing the subject. For us to succeed in American schools, we have to have enough self-discipline, a solid foundation (both intellectual and financial), and a whole lot of talents. Those who are always dreaming to study in America and in the meantime complaining about the education system of China, why don’t you put yourself in other people’s shoes and think in another way? What we are studying right now IS the perfect preparation for us to achieve our goals. Everyday trainings train our will-power and physical strength, and knowledge works as our basic skills. No matter what American college or university you eventually apply for, physical and mental power is always needed.

Life in Caldwell College really is fascinating and inspiring. I’ve surely learned a lot, and experienced the inexperienced. It has always been my dream to study in a school like this, and for many others as well. So learn more and go for it. May our dreams finally come true!
